"Don't waste time if you don't want to find Lewis and Clark. Who cares who they are..."

1. looking for lewis & clark - the long ryders

Say Long Ryders and I'll answer "Looking for Lewis & Clark". What a great song this is, recorded in 1985 for Island Records, released as a double-7". Who were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark? They were US explorers in the Far West in the early 19th century, mainly the Pacific Northwest; so without them, no Sonics, no Kingsmen, no Nirvana,...

9. tarzan of kings road - the washing machine

From their sole 45 recorded in 1996 for Bricolage Records, the perfect label for their lo-fi sound. Just think of Blaszczyk & Les Electrolux and The Pack Bold Girls mixed in an uptempo cocktail.

2. geno - dexy's midnight runners

Undoubtedly the best Dexy's song and certainly the last one, before they sold their soul to commercial pulp like "Come on Eileen", two years later in 1982.

10. johnny hotrod - nashville pussy

Blaine Cartwright founded Nine Pound Hammer when he still lived in Kentucky, but when he moved to Georgia he started a new band with his wife Ruyter Suys. The lovely Corey Parks was bass player until  2000. When she left, they moved to 70s hard rock sounds. This is from their first 45, released on Black Lung Records in 1996. On vol 36 I've picked their best song.

3. teddy the dink - martha & the muffins

Martha & The Muffins is Echo Beach and vice versa. Why don't you flip over that 45 and listen to the crazed new wave pop sounds of "Teddy the dink". Martha Johnson and friends hailed from Toronto, Canada, and formed the band in 1977. A 1980 release on Dindisc, their second 45.

11. simon templar - splodgenessabounds

Fun punk with ska influences that reached the Top 10 in the UK charts in 1980 while the rest of the world never heard of this crazy band.  See also vol 89.

4. mickey - toni basil

Who's ever heard of Antonia Basilotta? Nobody. She recorded a marvelous northern soul song in 1966 "Breakaway" and then disappeared to return in the early 80s, being almost 40 years old. This 1981 song was a hit in several countries, but not in Belgium.

12. hitler's in the charts again - the exploited

B-side of their 1981 killer 45 "Dead cities". Who's that guy? Well, if you ask a person to name a well known German, his name pops up the most; he's in the charts again and again. Secret Records also released this one by Scotlands' best known punk outfit.

5. geoffrey ingram - television personalities

"And don't the kids just love it" is one of the best albums from 1982. "Geoffrey Ingram" is the last song on Side A of their first album. Rough Trade issued the album while the original 45 was on Whaam!Records. This is from the 1992 reissue on Overground Records.

13. jim motherfucker - the new bomb turks

Billy Childish produced this 3-track single featuring two cover songs, including this Gaunt song, in 1993 for the Belgian label Demolition Derby Records. Their debut release was a splitsingle with Gaunt, that wrote "Jim motherfucker" in 1992. The New Bomb Turks hailed from Columbus, Ohio, home of many great combos.

6. smilly willy - the 5.6.7.8's

The B-side features "Mr. Lee", a Japanese girls ode to Dionysus Records boss, Lee Joseph. Who the heck is this Willy? Frat garage tune from 1998.

14. jesse's earth odyssey - the perverts

Singer-guitarist Dandy Dave is a good friend of Jorge Explosion's from Gijon in Asturias. Maybe that's why this Dutch surf instrumental is also known as "Montagnas Asturiana". Recorded in 1995 for Out Now Record.

7. sooprize package for mr. mineo - the statics

American answer to Thee Headcoats, The Statics hailed from Seattle, Washington. Two albums and ten singles was their output, this being their best. I wonder what's inside that package for Sal Mineo. A 1994 Real Records release from Hampshire, the realm of Billy Childish.

15. sweet sam - the vice barons

From their very last single in 1995 on the 3M&P Records label and it's about one of the nicest girls I know from Brussels. Swirling Hammond organ and fuzz guitar turn this hot rod garage tune to a higher level.

8. johnny jack - thee headcoatees

A splitsingle featuring Thee Headcoats with "Sufference wharf" on the other side. One of the best Headcoatees songs. There's also a splendid live version on "Live at the Western Room London" from 1994. A 1995 Damaged Goods release.

16. abdul and cleopatra - jonathan richman & the modern lovers

On vol 28 there was his "Cleopatra". Now she's found a mate. But actually it's the same song. The guitar break in the middle of the song is fantastic. Boston was his home, where he formed The Modern Lovers in 1970. They broke up in '74 and reformed two years later. From those early period I absolutely love "She cracked".
