LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 67
"Cold & dark 3" - 16 post-punk and other weird "new" sounds from the 80s and 90s

In The Trashcan Records       GEM067
"I don't care there's nothing wrong when we see the fallout of the hangman on happy families, yet heads will roll..."

1. hangman - the lorries

Chris Reed was the band's songwriter. I don't know why Red Lorry Yellow Lorry suddenly decided to release this as by The Lorries. Highly influential goth band from the UK, that sounds like Sisters Of Mercy. A 1987 release on Cherry Red Records.

9. legion - theatre of hate

"Do you believe in the westworld", "Eastworld", "Original sin" are a few songs written by Kirk Brandon, frontman of Theatre Of Hate, who was also active in Spear Of Destiny, The Senate and Dead Men Walking, a British "super group".  This is from their first release, on SS Label in 1980. See vol 98 for more Theatre Of Hate songs.

2. always there - the rose of avalanche

Here you can hear their early influences very clearly; they have listened to bands like The Sisters Of Mercy and The March Violets, but also Echo & The Bunnymen and Psychedelic Furs. But actually they have more in common with The Cult as they both love American psychedelic rock from the late 60s. A 1986 Fire release.

10. heads will roll - echo & the bunnymen

B-side of "Never stop", their 1983 single on Korova, one year before their breakthrough album "Ocean rain". Both songs also appear on "Porcupine".

3. see - redbeat

Early 80s UK post-punk outfit, similar to Killing Joke. In 1981 they released this 7" on their own Mean Machine Products label. See vol 77 for the A-side.

11. au travers - psychose

Rare, sole release by this Belgian band from Lessines. It's French sung new wave à la Polyphonic Size with more guitar and less synths. Issued by Tourne Sol Music.

4. nothing wrong - red lorry yellow lorry

One of the most interesting UK post-punk gothic bands from the mid-80s. Mixing Bauhaus and Sisters Of Mercy they still managed to create their own sound. Their best album was the first, "Talk about the weather". This song is also the title track of their third album, the first one on Situation Two Records. I prefer their Red Rhino period.

12. heavy rotation - sonovac

On vol 26 I've put the fantastic Human Fly cover; here's the flipside, a minimal synth beat track by brother and sister, Mike and Suzy Silver. An Output Recordings release from 1999.

5. don't care - struggler

Rare Belgian debut 45 by Struggler from Limburg. They recorded it in 1980 for Doggy Doo Records, "Home of the nuts". See vol 77 for the A-side.

13. fallout - the monochrome set

From their very first demo tape recorded in 1978 and released a year later on their one-off record label Disquo Blue. Postpunk band that never achieved any real success except for Japan. This is the flipside to "He's Frank".

6. happy families - television personalities

"Part time punks" is their best song and appears also on this 4-track EP from 1978. Lo-fi new wave by Dan Treacy's band with numerous line-ups. Already here you can taste the spirit of Syd Barrett.

14. punk-a-rama - venus & the razorblades

Kim Fowley's attempt to cash in on the punk craze, but he didn't quite understand what punk rock was all about. I can understand his work with The Runaways from a year earlier, but not this release. Still it's a hilarious glam rock song from 1977, a Bomp release; my copy is on Spark, also from 1977. Their drummer was Nickey Alexander aka Nicky Beat, who went on to become the drummer of The Germs, The Weirdos and even The Cramps.

7. lying again - the boomtown rats

Although there's still that punky attitude, here you already get that poppy sound we know from "I don't like Mondays". It's the flipside to "She's so modern" from 1978, their finest year.

15. cut dead (acoustic) - the jesus and mary chain

From a bonus 7" with their "Some candy talking" EP which contains 4 acoustic versions of album tracks. It's moody, it's brilliant, it's almost perfect. By the end of 1986 they'd reached their perfect sound.

8. concrete dirk da davo - the neon judgement

This 45, their second, features two songs called Concrete. I prefer the one by Dirk Da Davo, subtitled "It feels so strong", while the other side is also known as "New York, stoney wall doll". Together with Front 242 they were the best known Belgian EBM band in the early 80s. Recorded in 1983 and released a year later.

16. pick it up - the employees

Fast ska tune by a Belgian band in 1980, featuring Kloot Per W. This was their first and also best known 45.
