1. cannibal roses - siouxsie & the banshees

Only to be found on this 45, as flipside to "Slowdive", which first appeared on the 1982 studio album "A kiss in the dreamhouse" and a year later on the live album "Nocturne".

9. bin wieder frei - benny

This is the only German version I know, besided the live one by Los Banditos. "Ca plane pour moi" in German? Yes. It's crazy. I know. It's 1978 and all over Europe people realized that Plastic Bertrand's punk hit single was a punk parody, hence the many crazy versions. Only in England and the USA the punks thought it was serious business, maybe thanks to The Damned's cover version of Elton Motello's English translation "Jet boy, jet girl". The biggest joke of all was that Plastic Bertrand aka Roger Jouret didn't sing the song at all. It was the writer Lou Deprijck who was the singer in disguise.

2. love in a void - kyra rubella & the shanks

I cannot think of a better Siouxsie & The Banshees cover version than this one by my compatriot, Kyra. See also vol 40 for more about this fantastic 45 from 1995 on Damaged Goods.

10. jacques cousteau - plastic bertrand

I must admit that when I was a kid, I thought this was an original. Years later I discovered that also this one was a cover song. Released in 1981 by RKM under production of Lou Deprijck.

3. social fools - devo

It's 1978 and Devo were a rising star in indieland USA. To proof mankind was de-evolving they wrote "Social fools".

11. ambition - armitage shanks

Liam Watson on bass guitar for the Shanks' fantastic rendition of Vic Godard's Subway Sect classic "Ambition", also covered by The Jesus And Mary Chain a decade earlier. The French label Wild Wild Records  put it as B-side of "Top international celebrities".

4. gates of steel - groovie ghoulies

Devo is unique. Devo songs are unique. Still this is a fine rendition of a Devo song, brought by poppunkers Groovie Ghoulies on their own record label Lookout in 1996. Vocalist is Roach; I don't know her real name.

12. different story - subway sect

Vic Godard loved soul and jazz but was sucked into the punk energy after attending a SexPistols gig and formed Subway Sect. This is no punk, it's a new wave of pop sound, safely put away as B-side of the wilder "Ambition", which can be found on vol 74.

5. love song - lagarto & the pleasure fuckers

Gonzalo Grondona aka Lagarto was a drummer from Madrid who founded Animal Records, giving us tons of great garage releases. Here he is with a splendid rendition of The Damned's "Love song" from 1979. Electro Harmonix released it in 1999 together with another cover song, "Hollydays in Cambodia" (sic) by Dead Kennedys. It's the second of three 45s I know by this crazy Spanish garagehead from Madrid, this time backed by the Pleasure Fuckers. See also vol 36.

13. no government - demolition girl

Anti-Pasti's "No government" in a new female jacket and it works out fine! In 1996 these girls recorded it for Thunderbaby Records. Also check out their album on Thunderwoman (get it?) Records, that includes covers of punk rock songs such as "Identity", "Mongoloid" and "I'm a cliché".

6. burglar - the damned

After a disastrous second album "Music for pleasure" they returned in 1979 with their best third album. "Burglar" is an excellent punk rock tune, a "Machine gun etiquette" outtake issued as B-side of "Smash it up" on Chiswick Records.

14. no government - anti-pasti

The original is always better than the original, certainly when that original is one of the best 1980 punk songs. From the 1980 "Four sore points EP", issued by Rondelet.

7. juke box babe - the countdowns

Suicide vocalist Alan Vega also loved rockabilly and wrote this indie club hit in 1981. The Countdowns recorded it in 1997 for Scooch Pooch Records. Two years later the band was asked to be the backing band of Andre Williams for his European tour.

15. are friends electric? - armitage shanks

Gary Numan and Tubeway Army were big in the UK, but in Europe they remained fairly unknown. Medway gutter guitar heroes Armitage Shanks did an excellent job on this Damaged Goods release.

8. i remember - suicide

A 1978 release on Red Star/Bronze Records by Alan Vega's group with Martin Rev. Formed in the early 70s in New York they became the world's first rock 'n' roll synthesizer group, loved and adored by many artists. This is the flipside to "Cheree", a track from their first eponymous album.

16. asylum - gary numan

Gary Webb founded Tubeway Army in 1978, after leaving The Lasers, but by the end of 1979, he went solo as Gary Numan. This is a synth-wave instrumental, issued as flipside to big seller "Cars".
