"I hate music 2" - 16 ways to express why you hate music you hear on the radio

In The Trashcan Records       GEM083
"The make-out party on the double decker bus produced the untouchable sound of oogy wawa carumba..."

1. i'm a criminal - the motards

This may be their most accessible recording; actually it was their very first, in 1994. It's the perfect opener for this volume. Austin, Texas, would never be the same. See vol 60 for my fave Motards track.

9. shanty tramp - the dirty lovers

After watching Shanty Tramp, an obscure B-movie, a certain Buddy Love (named after the guy who recorded the wildest version of Elvis' "Heartbreak hotel") and his bandmates of The Dirty Lovers from Geelong near Melbourne, Australia, decided to write a song about it in 1989. The result is a great garage trash record on garage label Dog Meat, released in 1990. After only two or three 45s two band members were killed in a car accident.

2. big city blues - bo weavil blues band

I think this is the only Lenox Records release I own. Fantastic greasy blues tune from 1999, but it should have been 1959 instead.

10. oogy wawa - the church keys

If you're a fan of anything related to Ungawa, you must buy a song called "Oogy wawa". Weird novelty frat garage with fuzz pedals, saxophone solo and twanging guitars on Norton Records in 1999.

3. big pussy sound - bette davis & the balconettes

Have love will travel? No, but these garage trash girls (and three guys) have certainly listened to the Sonics' version for their own "Big pussy sound", released by the ever fabulous Damaged Goods Records in 1998, their second on that label. DJ John Peel was a fan.

11. carumba! - los easylays

Mexican flavoured frat garage from London, 1992 on an EP, released by NV Records. See vol 23 for more about this 4-track EP.

4. the blood fusion - los cincos

Originally known as One Eyed Richard & The Goddamn Liars, who released one mini-album on Mollycoddle in 1994, Los Cincos recorded a couple of albums (two with April March) and  half a dozen 45s. This was their fourth, from 1996 on Outer Universe Research. Imagine Devo with surf punk garage attitude and you get the sound of this Californian outfit.

12. bulldozer - the tight fits

Ex-Trashwomen drummer girl Tina Lucchesi is the pin-up on the front cover on this 1995 Pure Filth Records release. They were a San Francisco glam punk band formed after the demise of The Rip-Offs, whose Jason and Shane White formed this band while Jon Von formed Les Dragueurs when he left for France.

5. untouchable sound - make-up

Ian, Steve, James and the lovely Michelle Mae on bass are (The) Make-Up, a guitar trash band from DC, formed in 1995. Their first (live) album contained a song I consider their best, "They live by night". A Belgian garage outfit, Catacombo,  used to play this one on their live set.

13. heat - the jesus and mary chain

In 1992 the fuzz and distortion pedals were still present, but the drum parts are not the same anymore. Britpop ruled and so these Scots had to follow the hype. "Reverence" was a massive club hit; this is the fantastic flipside.

6. double decker bus - the count backwards

From San Francisco and featuring members from The Mummies and the three girls of The Trashwomen. It was their sole release on Big City Records from London, 1994. Originally it's a song by The Vibes, the UK kings of garage trash. See vol 31 for two more version of this wild garage tune.

14. hit - the jesus and mary chain

Fuzz layer upon fuzz layer under an echo laden blanket is their trademark. Think away the distorted guitars and you'll hear a crystal clear popsong. A 1986 track from their double-7" "Some candy talking".

7. side track - the highlander ii's

One of the trashiest garage outfits ever to emerge from the San Francisco scene, featuring Repent Records owner Mike Lucas. We know Lucas from The Phantom Surfers. Released in 1994 on the fantastic Planet Pimp Records.

15. i ain't got - the grey spikes

Garage trash punk outfit from Los Angeles. This comes from their  debut, a four-track EP on Vital Gesture Records from 1992.

8. t.v. eye - the jet boys

We all love The Stooges and bands that love The Stooges, even when it's a Japanese guitar trash band from Tokyo. Formed in the early 90s they recroded this song for the Belgian label Demolition Derby. On the same 1995 EP you'll also find a G.G. Allin song and "Somethin' else", the Eddie Cochran standard, besides an own composition "Wild party".

16. make out party - loli & the chones

One-sided two-track 45 on one of the most influential trash punk rock record labels from California. It's a 1996 release. Other releases were on Repent Records, another legendary underground indie label from California.
