LOOK WHAT I COULD FIND vol 95
"Garage gems 6" - 16 garage beatin' blasts from the past

In The Trashcan Records       GEM095
"The second garagemania was born in the early 80s and is still going on; so, somebody buy me a drink or leave me alone..."

1. hindu gods (of love) - the lipstick killers

One of the most exciting songs ever to emerge from that continent, first released in 1979 on Lost In Space and reissued in 1980 on Voxx Records.  Formed after the disbanding of The Psycho Surgeons, Australia's first punk rock group, in 1978. This is killer garage punk!

9. don't say it's a lie - the gorgons

Thee Headcoatees turned this Billy Childish song into their most marvelous and sexy song. It's amazing what this French combo has done with it. Fantastic 1993 release on Smegma records, a splitsingle with Les Moonshiners.

2. somebody buy me a drink - the earls of suave

The best song by these guys featuring Headcoat bass player Tub Johnson. Oscar Brown Jr wrote this song in 1960 for his "Sin & soul" album that also featured his best song "But I was cool". A Vinyl Japan release from 1994.

10. knock on my door - the brood

Magnificent girl garage rock song by The Brood from 1992 on Estrus. They came from Portland in the Northwest.

3. something's missing - the escalators

Ex-Meteors frontman and founder Nigel Lewis formed The Escalators (first known as Clapham South Escalators) and recorded several 45s for Big Beat Records. This 45 was from 1983.

11.  vicious circle - yard trauma

This B-side of "Watching monster movies" sounds a bit like their early work, except for the instrumental break. My favourite period of this Phoenix, Arizona garage band was 1984-1985, when they were a little more psychedelic and less heavy rock minded. A 1991 release on Munster.

4. leave me alone - clapham south escalators

Aka The Meteors in a garage rock mood. They recorded only this 45. A 1981 release on Upright Records.  See vol 100 for more.

12. you're to blame - the nuthins

Fuzz guitar and Farfisa organ are the main ingredients on this 1995 recording on For Monsters. See also vol 15 for more Nuthins tracks.

5. another half hour till sunrise - the tall boys

One of the two Meteors frontmen Nigel Lewis with one of his various projects recorded the first Tall Boys songs in 1982 and they were issued by Big Beat Records that same year. Guitar player on this tune is… yes, P. Paul Fenech, the other Meteors frontman, who continued The Meteors when Nigel left to form The Escalators, which was born out of The Clapham South Escalators, a pseudonym for... The Meteors. Is it still clear to you???

13. substance abuse - make up

"Get on the right track", and "Blow your mind" is what you get after this "Substance abuse", a 1995 release on Time Bomb. Post-punk meets garage trash pop in America's capital.

6. night dance - les thugs

This French outfit got known thanks to their "Femme fatale" inclusion on "Battle of the garages vol 4", a classic neo-garage compilation series from the mid-80s. This is the A-side, a punky garage tune from 1984 on their debut release. Their following output was less garage and more punk. A Gougnaf Mouvement release.

14. gimme love - the others

Italian beat psych with snotty vocals by "Misty Lane" Massimo. I discovered the band through their 1993 Music Maniac album "Teen trash vol 7" and I was an instant fan. A 1997 Detour release.

7. christmas rock 'n' roll - the cannibals

A record sleeve shaped like a Christmas sock for Santa Claus, containing one surprise 45 with two Christmas tunes, "New Year's eve song" and this one. In December 1985 Mike Spenser released it on his own Hit Records. For a short while I thought I had found that Christmas spirit.

15. i had to tell you - silver bullit

Swedish garage rockers from Gothenburg with their first release. A 1998 Clearspot 45.

8. talk to me - the vindicators

I believe they came from Calgary, near the Rocky Mountains. For the Canadian label OG Music they recorded a 6-track mini-album in 1989. Probably this was an outtake from those '89 sessions. I know also a terrific version of "You're too much" on the OG comp "It came from Canada #5". This is straight-forward, in-your-face garage rock. From a freebie with Abus Magazine in 1989.

16. snake pit - sir bald diddley & his wigouts

Ghoulish Wray-ish surf-garage track by Sir Bald Diddley aka Baldie McGhee aka Hipbone Slim on his own record label Alopecia. Released in 1994 on their very first EP.
